The 61st Virginia Infantry was formed in the fall of 1861when the 7th Battalion Viginia Infantry expanded to 8 companies.  The men who joined these companies were mostly natives of the Tidewater area.

               Company B...........Wilson Guards
               Company C...........Blanchard Greys
               Company D...........Jackson Light Infantry
               Company E............Border Rifles
               Company F..........Isle of Wight Avengers

     The Confederate Defenders and the Virginia Rangers were not immediately given an alphabetical designation.  In August, 1862, the 61st became a complete regiment (10 companies) when men from the 41st joined the 61st.

               Company I.............Billsoly Blues

This photograph portrays a reunion of some Confederate soldiers of Company F, 61st Virginia Infantry Regiment,
General Mahone's Brigade, also known as the "Isle of Wight Avengers".  Photographed (circa 1910) at
Beaver Dam Baptist Church located in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
This Church was a recruiting center for the Confederate Army during the War Between the States.

 

Below is a photograph of Private Mills Edward Britt (1835 - 1925), also shown above in the first row, 2nd from the left.   Private Britt
was a soldier in Company F, 61st Virginia Infantry Regiment, General Mahone's Brigade.  He served throughout the
War Between the States and never missed a battle muster call until he was wounded in the Crater Battle at Petersburg in 1864.
Private Britt's final resting place is at Mt. Carmel Christian Church Cemetery at the junction of Rt. 258 and 614, Walters, VA.
